Once a tunnel rat …
John Fortunato was an 11-Bravo in Vietnam, a grunt like countless others. What separated him from everyone else was knowing right where the enemy was hiding. Even in the dark.
That made him a natural tunnel rat. Then one day he went down a hole with his best friend Jamie Doolan. John was almost killed by a grenade and Doolan … disappeared.
Leaving a man behind is a mortal sin and John did penance every day. When he got home, he and two vet friends secretly recreated a portion of the VC’s tunnels under the town of Elk River.
Years later, a fight comes to Elk River, a strike against the town’s biggest employer. The labor dispute turns deadly when Tommy Boyle, the union leader and John’s closest living relative, is killed — and the county sheriff might be an accomplice.
That leaves John with no choice but to investigate, using his tunnels to help find the truth. When Tommy’s nemesis, company owner Tony Hunt, learns of the tunnels’ existence, he decides there’s only one thing to do. Bring in his own Viet Cong.

I don't usually read books of this genre but may have to rethink that policy. "Digger" is an extremely suspenseful novel with more twists than a mountain stream. The characters are portrayed well and in Ty's case especially show solid growth from the beginning to the end of the book. An awful lot of good and some not so good people die along the way. That's why I'm only giving this a 4 star review. I don't suppose there was much left for a sequel anyway but I'm a sucker for "happily ever after" endings and didn't quite get one here. Nonetheless, I'd highly recommend this book.Product details

Digger eBook Joseph Flynn Reviews
Tunneling below an entire town and a connection to the Vietnam era. In spite of some implausible moments, quite a good book from Joe Flynn. Always something special from him. Don't miss this one.
It's not fine art. Nor is it "literary" fiction. It is an easy story to read and enjoy, especially if you have some interest in the Tunnel Rats who served in Vietnam fighting in the tunnels of Cu Chi. I enjoyed it.
I always enjoy reading Joseph Flynn books and this one is no exception. There comes a point when I can not stop reading his books until I reach the end. Great characters and a very interesting plot line.
Oh my goodness! I couldn't put it down! A page turner from the start. I stumbled on Joseph Flynn's work while looking for a new read. And now, 14+ books later I have a new favorite author. Digger is by far the best Flynn novel I've read to date and I can't wait to start the next one! ***Spoiler alert *** Mr Flynn, I'll sulk over the ending for days.
I thought this book was well written and edited, but I did not enjoy it quite as much as other books by this Author that I have read.
The first reason for this being I found the supernatural aspect very hard to accept and secondly I could not imagine anybody digging a labyrinth of tunnels under a town without someone discovering them. This said I am sure many readers will enjoy the book regardless of my comments, for as I have said before, it is fiction.
Good tight writing. Moves you forward like a flood in a tunnel. Excellent plotting and suspense with credible characters. A bit over the top with magical thinking re dead loved ones popping up. Disappointing conclusion with so many primary characters buying the farm. However, a fine book with polished writing skill.
One review was titled "Total Dude Book" and while men that like this genre will probably like this book, so will women who like action & adventure novels.
When John came back from fighting in Vietnam, he started working on building a tunnel in Elk Grove, as small town in Illinois. After his friends, Darien and Gil returned they joined him. Each vet had had another reason that just the common thread that joined most vets together, they had left the war, but the war had not left them. They often joked, saying they were trying to exorcise or exercise their demons.
Darien also felt safer in his tunnel than anywhere else. For Gil, it was his way of remembering the glory of being an elite soldier. John's reason was the guilt over his best buddy being killed and not bringing his body back. They were the only three that new of their underground masterpiece.
Flynn does a great job of blending the town's story, their story, and the labor struggle in short, easy to read chapters. There is a lot of violence, but it doesn't make the story any worse.
I have enjoyed all of Flynn's books and my only complaint is that there are not enough of them. The book could have been better if the charcter had been drawn better. For that reason I would rate this book 4 1/2. (I wish would put stars that you could fill in 1/4 increments. IMHO, it would help the rating system be more accurate).
