Sworn enemies by day . . . passionate lovers by night
The cowboy moved so quickly Caroline didn't have time to think, much less react. One moment he was standing there looking at her across the blazing hot Nevada street, the next moment, she was in his arms.
Her protests were stopped as he bent his head toward her. A complete stranger, a cowboy she'd met just moments ago when she stepped off the dusty stagecoach was actually going to put his mouth on hers and kiss her. Things like this never happened in Boston!
Just before she thought she would certainly swoon from the heat and the breathlessness and the shocking thrill of anticipation, the sound of gunshots pierced the fog she was in and a bullet whizzed past her left ear.
The cowboy swooped her up into his arms then dropped to the ground and rolled with her under the stagecoach. Her heavy skirts rode up over her thighs and she struggled to pull them down before he got a glimpse of her lacy pantalettes but it was no use. He had her pinned with his body and the way they fit together was shameful. His chest was pressed so close to her that she was certain he could feel the outline of her breasts through her blue dress. His hipbones jutted against the slight soft curve of her stomach and she dared not imagine the cause of the powerful heat pressing against her belly.
He took full advantage of the situation and positioned himself between her legs and she hated herself for noticing just how handsome he really was. She'd never felt more vulnerable”"or more alive”"in her entire life.
"You needn't look so pleased," she hissed as another round of gunfire ricocheted off the stagecoach above them. "I don't know how any decent person can live in such a terrible, lawless place like”"" She fumbled for words as he brought his mouth closer to hers.
"Welcome to Silver Spur," Jesse Reardon said.
And then he kissed her.

Midnight Lover edition by Barbara Bretton Romance eBooks
Though the pioneering spirit is seen throughout American history, the taming of the wild west continues to be a favorite subject among historians and non-historians alike. For romance writers like Barbara Bretton, the wild west is fertile ground for love stories. Yet, among the thousands of western romance novels out there, "Midnight Lover" stands out because the protagonists - Jesse Reardon and Caroline Bennett embody the pioneers who went west seeking a different life.Set in 1875 in a Nevada boomtown, Jesse Reardon by sheer force of his personality, his skills in cards and managing money, is the town's king pin. Caroline Bennett, a Boston socialite came to Silver Spur to claim her inheritance but found out first hand that the East Coast's definition of ownership is different in the wild west. And to her disconcertment, her attraction to Jesse Reardon grew each time they meet.
But, Jesse and Caroline's relationship was not just an affair of the heart. It also concerned the whole town which seem to be against marriage. There was also the problem of stray bullets killing innocent bystanders. But, are those really stray bullets or just bad aim on the shooter because Jesse and Caroline get more than their fair share of bullets going their way.
It's a story of pioneering men and women; it's how the west was won and most of all, it's about love's triumph against all odds. You will love Jesse and Caroline. You will also love the supporting characters. And, for the anti-heroes - you feel their pain!

Midnight Lover edition by Barbara Bretton Romance eBooks Reviews
what a great Book..I read over 1000 romance books over time..mostly Historical and Paranormal romance..So sometimes it is hard for me to find a good book to read.... I got this as a free book from for my ...with free books u never know what u will get...but I'm willing to try new Authors...I read good ones and not so good ones.....this will be a keeper..well done..give it a try ..u will love it..I will read more books from this Author..
Although the story line was somewhat predictable, the method in which it was told kept my interest. I didn't want to put it down, but wanted to see what antics Caroline had up her sleeve next. The author painted a picture of her with a strong will, don't-stand-in-my-way attitude but she wasn't the type to be overbearing and obnoxious.
At first I couldn't stand Jesse but the author turned him into a likable guy. She did a good job of showing the inner turmoil they both faced as they went down a rather strange path. Will keep this one to read again.
Jesse Reardon was a gambler and a man with power; he wins ownership of the Crazy Arrow saloon and a mine from Aaron Bennett in a card game. Aaron had a history of failures and this one cost him his life. When Bennett's daughter, Caroline, shows up in Silver Spur to take ownership of her father's saloon and mine, she discovers the fact that Jesse considers himself to be the owner. Caroline tells Jesse that she has the deeds and therefore the property is hers. Jesse tries to get Caroline back on the stage out of town more than once, without success. When the judge comes to town they are surprised to hear that they both have rights to the properties but the only way to both claims is for them to marry and share the properties.
I loved this book. The way it is written you can 'see' the characters as the story unfolds. Jesse has a standing date with the madame of the Golden Dragon for food and fellowship. Jesse and Caroline secretly marry and even though their marriage is a secret and a business arrangement, Jesse's not sure how to get around Jade, but once he married, he had no desire to be with her. The night Jesse plans to have his wedding night with Caroline, he is nervous because she is innocent, but he finds that very appealing. And though he's had sex with many women, he'd never been with a woman where his heart was in it and that changed everything.
First, I hate being FORCED to describe the plot of this book as "Predictable" as it was not.....It was just plain boring. However, I had to choose something so I could leave a review. Now for my honest review I really could not find any redeeming qualities in this book. I will admit that I only read through to the 50% mark in the book before giving up but that was only by pushing myself to do so. I wanted to stop at 30% but I thought that maybe, just maybe it would begin to get better-WRONG! I finally got so fed up with the h that I had to stop reading this train wreak. I could not warm up to EITHER of the main characters. The h was nothing but a puffed up, childish, whining shrew without backbone. Every time she opened her mouth I wanted to stuff it with a rag! And the H wasn't any better a self-centered, boorish @ss. I'm just glad that I got this book for free for I would hate to think I wasted my money on this.
I like my westerns w/a bit of heat & this one had almost zero until the end.... & even then only a dash. Although the story flowed & did keep my interest, a good editor would have easily trimmed 25-30% off & still kept the heart & soul of the story; at almost 300 pages, I was starting to skim near the end. I did enjoy the build up of passion between the H & h, but @ times it moved too slowly or repeated past information. My favorite part of the book was the wonderful epilogue, which sooo many authors neglect, it skipped 50 years into the future & tied up many loose ends giving a very satisfying end to the entire story.
Not sure if I would read another of Ms. Bretton's stories b/c of length & lack of heat but if you like innocence vs macho w/a HEA, this might be a good choie for you.
